Examination of the clinical factors associated with attendance at emergency departments for chronic pain management and the cost of treatment relative to that of other significant medical conditions

Cassie Higgins et al.

Summary: The study examined the ED utilization of patients with chronic pain, identified risk factors associated with chronic musculoskeletal pain attendance, and estimated the comparative cost of treatment. It found that all-cause ED attendance was higher in those with chronic pain, with chronic musculoskeletal pain being one of the most expensive conditions to treat, putting a significant burden on ED services. Improved understanding of risk and protective factors could help inform healthcare redesign to reduce avoidable ED attendances for chronic pain management.
