Generating Options and Choosing Between Them Depend on Distinct Forms of Value Representation

Adam Morris et al.

Summary: Humans have a remarkable capacity for flexible decision-making, deliberating among actions by modeling their likely outcomes. In real-world decision-making, people face an important challenge with an enormous number of possibilities to choose among. Through a hybrid architecture of frugal cached value estimates and context-specific criteria, people are able to quickly propose valuable candidate actions during decision-making.

Neural basis of corruption in power-holders

Summary: This study used model-based fMRI to investigate the neural substrates of bribery, revealing that areas such as the anterior insula, right temporoparietal junction, and ventromedial prefrontal cortex are involved in processing the moral costs of bribery. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is selectively engaged in guiding anti-corrupt behaviors.

Theory Before the Test: How to Build High-Verisimilitude Explanatory Theories in Psychological Science

Iris van Rooij et al.

Summary: Drawing on the philosophy of psychological explanation, it is suggested that psychological science should focus more on psychological capacities rather than just effects. By extending Marr's framework to other areas of psychology, such as social, developmental, and evolutionary psychology, new benefits can be brought to these fields. Theoretical analyses can endow a theory with minimal plausibility even before contact with empirical data, contributing to addressing critical issues in psychological science.
