Cognitive impairment in mild traumatic brain injury: a diffusion kurtosis imaging and volumetric study

Ming-Liang Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated brain structural changes in patients with sub-acute mTBI using DKI and volumetric analysis. Results showed that DKI was sensitive in detecting lower mean kurtosis in widespread white matter regions and subcortical nuclei, which were correlated with cognitive deficits.

Factors increasing the risk of suicide after traumatic brain injury: a state-of-the-science review of military and civilian studies

Kayla S. McIntire et al.

Summary: Individuals with traumatic brain injury have a higher risk of suicide compared to the general population, with comorbid depression and PTSD being significant risk factors. Substance misuse, sex, and sleep disturbance moderate this risk. Limited literature quality is influenced by sample size and inconsistencies in reporting findings.

Independent and Synergistic Associations Between TBI Characteristics and PTSD Symptom Clusters on Cognitive Performance and Postconcussive Symptoms in Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans

Sarah M. Jurick et al.

Summary: This study investigated the independent and interactive associations between mTBI characteristics and PTSD symptoms in treatment-seeking veterans of the U.S. conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The results showed that higher hyperarousal and re-experiencing symptoms were associated with reduced processing speed among veterans with repetitive and blast-related mTBI history. PTSD symptoms, specifically hyperarousal, were also linked to poorer executive functioning and higher postconcussive symptoms, supporting synergistic effects of specific PTSD symptom clusters and TBI characteristics. Limited associations were found between injury characteristics and cognition chronically following mTBI.

Estimation of ascertainment bias and its effect on power in clinical trials with time-to-event outcomes

Erich J. Greene et al.

Summary: Blinding in clinical trials is crucial to prevent biases, but in some cases, it may not be possible. This study discusses the impact of ascertainment bias and recommends revising outcome definitions to more stringent ones to improve overall trial power. It suggests that even though fewer events may be observed, adopting a stricter definition is beneficial in most situations.

Acute Diffusion Tensor and Kurtosis Imaging and Outcome following Mild and Traumatic Brain Injury

Jonas Stenberg et al.

Summary: This prospective cohort study investigated the associations between acute diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) metrics and persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS) 3 months after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Patients who developed PPCS had poorer white matter microstructural integrity acutely after the injury, compared with patients who recovered and healthy controls. Differences became less pronounced when cognitive reserve was controlled for, suggesting that pre-existing individual differences in axonal integrity accounted for some of the observed differences.

Evaluation of diffusion measurements reveals radial diffusivity indicative of microstructural damage following acute, mild traumatic brain injury

Margaret Y. Mahan et al.

Summary: The study revealed changes in the shape of diffusion tensor in patients with mild TBI during the acute phase of injury, with D-radial identified as a potential biomarker for microstructural damage. This suggests that differentiating diffusion measurements could be useful in detecting variations in underlying pathophysiology after injury.

Prevalence and Clinical Correlates of Comorbid Anxiety and Panic Disorders in Patients with Parkinson's Disease

Camilla Elefante et al.

Summary: Mood and anxiety disorders are common neuropsychiatric syndromes associated with Parkinson's disease. Patients with anxiety disorders in PD tend to have a history of psychiatric symptoms, lifetime major depression, and higher anxiety scores. Current anxiety disorders in PD are linked to more severe psychopathology, depressive symptoms, and avoidant behavior.
