Vision loss in giant cell arteritis

Laura Donaldson et al.

Summary: In patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA), almost two-thirds develop ocular symptoms, with up to 30% experiencing permanent visual loss. The most common mechanisms for visual loss in GCA include anterior arteritic optic neuropathy, central retinal artery occlusion, and posterior ischaemic optic neuropathy.

Epidemiology of biopsy-confirmed giant cell arteritis in southern Sweden-an update on incidence and first prevalence estimate

Pavlos Stamatis et al.

Summary: The incidence of biopsy-confirmed GCA has been decreasing by approximately 2% per year in Skane, Sweden over the past 2 decades. However, there is still a high prevalence of GCA among patients currently receiving treatment. More cases are diagnosed during the spring and summer compared to the winter.

Temporal Clusters of Kawasaki Disease Cases Share Distinct Phenotypes That Suggest Response to Diverse Triggers

Summary: The study found that cases of Kawasaki disease within a temporal cluster exhibit more similar patterns of host response, demographic characteristics, and clinical features, which may be related to different triggers or intensities of exposure leading to clusters of cases that share a similar response pattern.

Seasonal variation in biopsy-proven giant cell arteritis in Eastern Denmark from 1990-2018

Elisabeth Bay Konig et al.

Summary: This study investigated the seasonal variation in biopsy-proven GCA cases in eastern Denmark over a 29-year period. The peak occurrence of GCA was found in the 70-79 years age group, with a higher risk of positive biopsy during summer compared to autumn. Although no association was found between weather parameters and biopsy outcomes, future studies pooling all GCA cases worldwide are needed to determine the seasonality in the occurrence of GCA.

Innate and Adaptive Immunity in Giant Cell Arteritis

Mitsuhiro Akiyama et al.

Summary: Autoimmune diseases can affect every organ system, with giant cell arteritis being the most common autoimmune vasculitis. There are distinct features in GCA that set it apart from other diseases, requiring tailored diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Recent studies are uncovering novel mechanisms for more precise pathogenic modeling and therapeutic targeting in GCA.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the incidence rate of Takayasu arteritis

Megan Rutter et al.

Summary: Takayasu arteritis (TAK) is a rare autoimmune rheumatic disease that mainly affects individuals between the ages of 20 and 30. The incidence rate varies significantly among different populations, with higher rates observed in women. Future research should focus on specific populations to better identify genetic and environmental risk factors.

ANCA Status or Clinical Phenotype - What Counts More?

Martin Windpessl et al.

Summary: Recent research suggests that a serology-based approach for classification of ANCA-associated vasculitides is more predictive and resembles genetic associations, clinical presentations, treatment responses, and comorbidities compared to a phenotype-based approach. Future studies may focus on this distinction to advance personalized medicine in the field.

Prevalence of Antineutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody-Associated Vasculitis and Spatial Association With Quarries in a Region of Northeastern France: A Capture-Recapture and Geospatial Analysis

Stephane Giorgiutti et al.

Summary: This study in a northeastern region of France found a significant spatial association between the presence of quarries and the prevalence of ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV), potentially indicating a role for silica as an environmental factor in this disease. The risk of AAV was notably higher in communities with quarries, and there was a significant spatial correlation between proximity to quarries and the number of GPA cases. Moreover, a significant association between the presence of quarries and positivity for specific ANCAs was observed.

Behcet's Disease-Do Microbiomes and Genetics Collaborate in Pathogenesis?

Nafeesa Mehmood et al.

Summary: Behcet's disease is a multisystem autoinflammatory condition with a genetic basis and dysbiosis of oral and gut microbiomes. Genetic polymorphisms in genes encoding molecules involved in gut biology may be linked to changes seen in microbiome studies, and a potential therapy for BD may involve an increase in bacterial species producing short chain fatty acids.

Summary: This review discusses the latest trends in the incidence and prevalence of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) in Asia, highlighting factors such as a Westernized diet, high socioeconomic status, improved hygiene, and vaccination development that may contribute to the increasing rates of IBD in Asian countries.
