Tissue-Specific Immunopathology in Fatal COVID-19

David A. Dorward et al.

Summary: In fatal COVID-19 cases, abnormal immune responses were found primarily in the lung and reticuloendothelial system, which were not clearly associated with the virus. Tissue-specific immunopathology in COVID-19 implicates a significant role of immune-mediated, virus-independent mechanisms in severe disease.

Myocarditis after Covid-19 Vaccination in a Large Health Care Organization

Guy Witberg et al.

Summary: Among 2.5 million patients who received the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine in a large Israeli health care system, the incidence of myocarditis at 42 days was 2.13 cases per 100,000 persons, with the highest incidence (10.69 per 100,000 persons) among male patients between the ages of 16 and 29 years. Most cases of myocarditis were mild or moderate.

Myocarditis after BNT162b2 mRNA Vaccine against Covid-19 in Israel

D. Mevorach et al.

Summary: The incidence of myocarditis increased after receiving the BNT162b2 vaccine in Israel, particularly after the second dose among young male recipients. The clinical presentation of myocarditis after vaccination was usually mild.

Allergic Reactions to Current Available COVID-19 Vaccinations: Pathophysiology, Causality, and Therapeutic Considerations

Nicholas G. Kounis et al.

Summary: Vaccines are highly effective in public health, but can trigger allergic reactions, particularly severe ones that activate mast cells and lead to anaphylactic shock. Allergic reactions to vaccines are typically caused by excipients rather than the active vaccine itself.

High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin T for the Detection of Myocardial Injury and Risk Stratification in COVID-19

Summary: Myocardial injury is common and predictive in COVID-19 patients, with most hs-cTnT increases related to myocardial injury and having significant prognostic implications. A single hs-cTnT <6 ng/L at presentation may help identify patients with a favorable prognosis.

Myocarditis With COVID-19 mRNA Vaccines

Biykem Bozkurt et al.

Summary: Myocarditis is a rare complication of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, predominantly affecting young adult and adolescent males, with most patients showing improvement in symptoms. Possible mechanisms include molecular mimicry between viral proteins and self-antigens, dysregulated immune pathways, immune response to mRNA, and dysregulated cytokine expression.

Surveillance for Adverse Events After COVID-19 mRNA Vaccination

Nicola P. Klein et al.

Summary: This study conducted interim analysis of safety surveillance data of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines and found that the incidence of selected serious outcomes within 1-21 days post-vaccination was not significantly higher compared with 22-42 days post-vaccination. Surveillance is ongoing despite wide confidence intervals for many outcomes.

Safety of the BNT162b2 mRNA Covid-19 Vaccine in a Nationwide Setting

Noam Barda et al.

Summary: The study found that after receiving the BNT162b2 vaccine, most adverse events were not associated with an increased risk, although there was a slight increase in the risk of myocarditis. On the other hand, infection with the Covid-19 virus significantly increased the risk of many serious adverse events.

Avoiding bias in self-controlled case series studies of coronavirus disease 2019

Osvaldo Fonseca-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Numerous studies, including SCCS studies, are underway to quantify the risks of complications following SARS-CoV-2 infection, with one study from Sweden showing an increased risk of AMI and ischemic stroke. The study highlights features of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 that may introduce bias, proposing methods to reduce or eliminate these biases based on data simulations.

Myocarditis occurrence with cancer immunotherapy across indications in clinical trial and post-marketing data

Tigran Makunts et al.

Summary: The study found a significant increase in reports of myocarditis in patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors, especially in combination therapies. Different combinations of therapies led to further increases in reporting odds ratios of myocarditis. Stratified analysis based on specific cancer types and treatment plans confirmed this trend.

Prevalence of abnormal cardiovascular magnetic resonance findings in recovered patients from COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Jin Young Kim et al.

Summary: The prevalence of abnormal cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) findings in recovered COVID-19 patients was investigated in this study, with nearly half of patients exhibiting one or more abnormal CMR findings. Non-athletes and patients with undetermined cardiac enzyme levels showed a higher prevalence of abnormal CMR findings and myocarditis compared to athletes and those with normal cardiac enzyme levels. Being an athlete was identified as a significant independent factor related to study heterogeneity.
