The transcriptional regulation of normal and malignant blood cell development

Benjamin Edginton-White et al.

Summary: The development of multicellular organisms involves differential usage of genetic information to generate various cell types that form specialized tissues. A shift from studying single genes to a global view of gene expression control has revolutionized our understanding of gene functions and cell communication. The paradigm of blood cell development highlights how transcription factors and chromatin components work together in shaping gene regulatory networks and driving differentiation, as well as how this process is altered in blood cancers. Emerging concepts place these processes within subnuclear structures, adding another layer of control to differential gene expression.

Anaemia and physical and mental health in the very old: An individual participant data meta-analysis of four longitudinal studies of ageing

Leah Palapar et al.

Summary: Research shows that very old individuals (aged 80+) with anaemia have worse functional ability, cognitive function, depressive symptoms, and self-rated health, and experience a faster decline in functional ability over time, indicating a possible association between anaemia and adverse health outcomes or underlying chronic conditions.

The functional interplay of transcription factors and cell adhesion molecules in experimental myelodysplasia including hematopoietic stem progenitor compartment

Suchismita Daw et al.

Summary: This study investigated the alterations in the osteoblastic niche in the bone marrow of patients with myelodysplastic syndrome. It revealed that affected osteoblasts can lead hematopoietic stem cells to proliferate actively, with dysregulation of cell adhesion molecules and transcription factors contributing to the abnormal myeloblasts in myelodysplastic cases.

Current and emerging strategies for management of myelodysplastic syndromes

Caner Saygin et al.

Summary: Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are hematopoietic disorders characterized by ineffective blood cell production, with treatment strategies focusing on improving quality of life for lower-risk MDS and extending survival for higher-risk MDS. Several promising drugs are currently being investigated for MDS treatment.

A real-world longitudinal study of anemia management in non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease patients: a multinational analysis of CKDopps

Marcelo Barreto Lopes et al.

Summary: This study describes longitudinal patterns of anemia prescriptions for non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease patients under nephrologist care. Results show that anemia treatment is initiated in a limited number of patients, even those with guideline-based indications. Discontinuation of anemia treatment is also very common.

Blockade of IL-22 signaling reverses erythroid dysfunction in stress-induced anemias

Mahesh Raundhal et al.

Summary: The study reveals that haplosufficiency of the serine-threonine kinase RIOK2 leads to decreased erythroid precursor frequency and subsequent anemia, with IL-22 playing a crucial role in affecting erythroid precursors. Blocking IL-22 signaling alleviates anemia, suggesting a potential therapeutic target for stress-induced anemias. The findings also suggest that immune dysregulation is involved in the pathogenesis of myelodysplastic syndromes.
