Single-Cell Transcriptomics Reveals a Heterogeneous Cellular Response to BK Virus Infection

Ping An et al.

Summary: BK virus (BKV) is generally harmless but can cause severe disease in immunosuppressed individuals, particularly kidney transplant patients. In infected renal cells, BKV induces cell cycle entry and upregulates genes associated with cell proliferation. Single-cell studies have shown that only a minority of cells are overwhelmed by the virus, with the infection appearing to be restricted in the remaining cells. Correlation of viral transcript levels with cellular gene expression patterns can provide insight into pathways manipulated by BKV during infection.
