Preferential transport of microplastics by wind

Joanna E. Bullard et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that wind transport is more effective in mobilizing microplastic particles compared to sand and soil. In wind erosion experiments, microplastic fibers were found to have lower enrichment compared to microbeads, with soil showing higher enrichment levels of microplastic fibers compared to sand, suggesting the need to carefully parameterize microplastic shape in models of atmospheric microplastic transport.

Suspended fine particulate matter (PM2.5), microplastics (MPs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air: Their possible relationships and health implications

Razegheh Akhbarizadeh et al.

Summary: The study found that in the urban area of Bushehr port, PM2.5 and MPs may act as carriers for airborne MPs and PAHs, respectively, and the transport of MPs is highly controlled by atmospheric conditions. Petrogenic sources from both proximal and distal origins play an important role in the level of PAHs. Chronic health risk evaluation via inhalation revealed a high potential cancer risk for PM2.5-bound PAHs in winter.

Microplastics in glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau: Evidence for the long-range transport of microplastics

Yulan Zhang et al.

Summary: Microplastics have been detected in glacier surface snow on the Tibetan Plateau, indicating long-distance transport of microplastics to the region. This evidence is significant for understanding the atmospheric transport of microplastics to the Tibetan Plateau and provides a global perspective on the microplastic cycle.

Constraining the atmospheric limb of the plastic cycle

Janice Brahney et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution is a significant issue in the 21st century, with recent research focusing on the transport of microplastics by the atmosphere. Studies suggest that atmospheric microplastics in the western United States primarily come from secondary reemission sources, highlighting the importance of understanding the sources and pathways of atmospheric plastic pollution.

Comparison of Deposition Sampling Methods to Collect Airborne Microplastics in Christchurch, New Zealand

Ella Knobloch et al.

Summary: The study tested four different deposition samplers for collecting airborne microplastics in New Zealand and found that the use of a funnel sampler or open beaker was effective. Fibres were the dominant morphotype of microplastics collected, but only 10% were confirmed as plastic through mu FTIR spectroscopy. This study adds to the growing evidence of the widespread presence of microplastics in the atmosphere.
