Simple, cost-efficient and high throughput method for separating single-wall carbon nanotubes with modified cotton

Timur Khamidullin et al.

Summary: A new, cost-effective separation method for carbon nanotubes is proposed in this work, allowing for industrial-scale processing of single-walled carbon nanotubes. The method involves passing a surfactant solution of unsorted CNTs through a column filled with chemically modified cotton wool, resulting in two fractions enriched with semiconductor and metallic CNTs, respectively. The separated fractions are fully characterized using various spectroscopic techniques.

Spin-state-dependent electrical conductivity in single-walled carbon nanotubes encapsulating spin-crossover molecules

Julia Villalva et al.

Summary: Encapsulating robust Fe-based SCO molecules within the 1D cavities of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) can endure encapsulation and positioning of individual heterostructures in nanoscale transistors, triggering a large conductance bistability and providing a backbone for readout and positioning of SCO molecules into nanodevices, as well as helping to tune their magnetic properties at the nanoscale. Spin-crossover molecules are ideal sensors due to their ability to change spin-state under various stimuli, but typically face limitations such as insulating and unstable properties, which can be overcome through encapsulation inside carbon nanotubes.

Submilligram-scale separation of near-zigzag single-chirality carbon nanotubes by temperature controlling a binary surfactant system

Dehua Yang et al.

Summary: A method to separate SWCNTs by chiral angle through temperature control of a binary surfactant system was reported in this study, resulting in efficient separation of 11 single-chirality SWCNT species including multiple zigzag and near-zigzag species at a submilligram scale. Lowering the temperature induced selective adsorption and reorganization of the cosurfactants on SWCNTs with different chiral angles, amplifying their interaction difference with gel. This work is believed to be a significant step towards industrial separation of single-chirality zigzag and near-zigzag SWCNTs.

Carbon-Involved Near-Surface Evolution of Cobalt Nanocatalysts: An in Situ Study

Feng Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the diffusion of carbon in transition metal catalysts at the atomic level using aberration-corrected environmental transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, revealing a cycle of carbon dissolving and precipitating in the catalysts near the nucleation site of single-walled carbon nanotubes. Understanding the dynamics of carbon atoms in catalysts provides deeper insights into the growth mechanisms of SWCNTs and other reactions. The developed methodologies have broad applications in studying catalytic and other processes.

Host-Guest Molecular Interaction Enabled Separation of Large-Diameter Semiconducting Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Xusheng Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a host-guest molecular interaction strategy was introduced for selectively extracting semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWCNTs) of expected diameters by filling polyoxometalate clusters of specific size in the inner cavities of SWCNTs. The sorted s-SWCNTs with diameters concentrated at around 1.3-1.4 nm showed typical semiconductor behavior in field-effect transistors. The sorting mechanism involving size-dependent electron transfer from nanotubes to inner polyoxometalate was revealed through spectroscopic and electron microscopic evidence, as well as theoretical calculations, demonstrating the flexibility in tuning the diameter of sorted s-SWCNTs.
