Relationship between objective and subjective cognitive load measurements in multimedia learning

Duygu Mutlu-Bayraktar et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to compare subjective and objective cognitive load measurements in a multimedia learning environment. Twenty university students participated in the study and their eye movements and multichannel electroencephalography (EEG) signals were recorded. Self-report ratings and retention performances were obtained at the end of the experiment. Pearson Correlation analysis revealed a significant relationship between the number of fixations and EEG frequency band powers. The results also showed a negative relationship between retention performance and both the number of fixations and self-reported measurements.

Summary: This study examines the effects of multimedia principles such as segmentation, learner control, and modality on learning and cognitive load in a flipped classroom setting. The findings have implications for the design of before-class instructions to enhance student engagement and understanding.
