The nature of giant clumps in high-z discs: a deep-learning comparison of simulations and observations

Omri Ginzburg et al.

Summary: We explore observed giant clumps in high-redshift disc galaxies using deep learning, detecting and classifying them based on cosmological simulations. The study shows similar abundances of LLCs and SLCs in simulations and observations, with LLCs being more massive and closer to the galactic center. The results suggest better clump survivability and formation mechanisms in high-mass galaxies.

Hierarchical fragmentation in high redshift galaxies revealed by hydrodynamical simulations

Baptiste Faure et al.

Summary: High-redshift star-forming galaxies exhibit different morphologies compared to nearby galaxies, with recent observations challenging previous findings by suggesting the presence of only low-mass structures or no structures at all. Simulated observations indicate that only low-mass structures are likely to be detected at very high resolution, potentially leading to the non-detection of giant clumps and introducing a bias in their detection.

From giant clumps to clouds - I. The impact of gas fraction evolution on the stability of galactic discs

Florent Renaud et al.

Summary: The study using simulations of isolated disc galaxies reveals that the variation in gas fraction affects the structure and stability of galaxies, and also influences the assembly of massive clumps. In gas-rich cases, molecular gas plays a significant role in the interclump medium and the assembly of massive clumps.

Giant star-forming complexes in high-z main-sequence galaxy analogues: the internal structure of clumps in DYNAMO galaxies

Summary: By studying the clumps in the DYNAMO sample, it was found that the centers of the clumps have bluer colors (indicating younger ages) compared to the edges. Older clumps were also found to be located closer to the centers of their galaxies.

The role of gas fraction and feedback in the stability and evolution of galactic discs: implications for cosmological galaxy formation models

Jeremy Fensch et al.

Summary: The gas mass fraction in high-redshift galaxies plays a crucial role in driving the evolution of giant clumps, with lower gas fractions leading to short-lived clumps and higher gas fractions resulting in long-lived clumps. This suggests that the gas fraction is the primary physical parameter determining the violent disc instabilities and evolution of giant clumps in high-redshift galaxies.
