Gaia early DR3 systemic motions of Local Group dwarf galaxies and orbital properties with a massive Large Magellanic Cloud

G. Battaglia et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively determines the systemic proper motions of 74 dwarf galaxies in the Local Group based on Gaia early data release 3, and the results are publicly available. Using a Bayesian methodology, the analysis takes into account the location of stars on different charts, revealing potential associations between some galaxies and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The study also delves into the orbital properties of galaxies, particularly noting the impact of the infall of a massive LMC on their trajectories.

Measuring the Milky Way mass distribution in the presence of the LMC

Lilia Correa Magnus et al.

Summary: This study presents a method to compensate for the perturbations caused by the interaction between the Milky Way and its largest satellite, the Large Magellanic Cloud. By computing the past trajectory of the satellite and integrating the orbits of tracer objects back in time, the authors are able to estimate the mass of the Milky Way more accurately.

Measuring the Mass of the Large Magellanic Cloud with Stellar Streams Observed by S5

Nora Shipp et al.

Summary: Stellar streams are used to measure the mass of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by fitting dynamical models to five streams in the Southern Galactic hemisphere. The LMC mass is found to be around 14-19 x 10(10) M-circle dot from an ensemble of streams, with a more constrained measurement of 18.8(-4.0)(+3.5) x 10(10) M-circle dot from the Orphan-Chenab stream. The study shows that the LMC's influence on structures in the Milky Way depends on the relative orientation and velocity kick imparted to the stream at their closest approach point.

The mass of the Milky Way out to 100 kpc using halo stars

Alis J. Deason et al.

Summary: Using distribution function analysis, the study estimated the mass of the Milky Way within 100 kpc. Systematic effects such as the dynamical influence of the Large Magellanic Cloud and unrelaxed substructure were carefully considered. The results showed that the Milky Way's mass estimate is approximately 6.07 x 10^11 M(circle dot) after corrections and adjustments to account for various factors.

The bursty star formation history of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy revealed with the HST

V Rusakov et al.

Summary: Through detailed analysis, we found that the star formation history of the Fornax galaxy exhibits sharp bursts and intermittent activity, with differences between different regions, suggesting that tidally induced star formation may be the cause of this phenomenon.

Tango for three: Sagittarius, LMC, and the Milky Way

Eugene Vasiliev et al.

Summary: By utilizing astrometric data, distance estimates, and line-of-sight velocities, we assembled a catalogue of candidate members of the Sagittarius stream, revealing a misalignment in the stream track attributed to a time-dependent perturbation in the gravitational potential, likely caused by the Large Magellanic Cloud. Our simulations showed that the presence of the LMC is necessary to accurately model the Sagittarius stream, highlighting the dynamic nature of the Milky Way's interaction with massive satellites like the LMC.

Detection of the Milky Way reflex motion due to the Large Magellanic Cloud infall

Michael S. Petersen et al.

Summary: The Large Magellanic Cloud is the most massive satellite galaxy of the Milky Way and its infall causes the Milky Way disk to move. The dynamical models of our Galaxy need to take into account this effect.

Action-based distribution function modelling for constraining the shape of the Galactic dark matter halo

Kohei Hattori et al.

Summary: Using astrometric data from Gaia DR2 for halo RR Lyrae stars, the 3D density profile of the Galactic dark matter (DM) halo within 30kpc from the Galactic centre was estimated. It was found that 99% of the posterior distribution of density flattening parameter q is located at q > 0.963, disfavoring a flattened DM halo and potentially contradicting cosmological simulations. Further studies are needed to explore the discrepancy between observations and simulations.

The infall of dwarf satellite galaxies are influenced by their host's massive accretions

Richard D'Souza et al.

Summary: Recent progress in understanding the massive accretions experienced by the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy has shown that the infall of a massive progenitor leads to the accretion and destruction of many subhaloes, causing a clustering in the infall time of subhaloes. Surviving subhaloes associated with a massive progenitor exhibit a wide diversity in their orbits. The star formation quenching times of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Local Group appear to be linked to the most massive accretions suffered by the Milky Way and M31.

All-sky dynamical response of the Galactic halo to the Large Magellanic Cloud

Charlie Conroy et al.

Summary: Gravitational interactions between the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Milky Way halo are expected to cause disequilibrium phenomena in the outer Milky Way. The detection of a local wake and northern overdensity in the Galaxy map provide important insights into this interaction. The data show that the outer halo is not in dynamical equilibrium, and the morphology and strength of the wake can be used to test the nature of dark matter and gravity.

Dynamical Model of the Milky Way Using APOGEE and Gaia Data

Maria Selina Nitschai et al.

Summary: A dynamical model of the Milky Way disk was constructed using Gaia EDR3 and APOGEE data, revealing information about the outer regions of the Galactic disk such as dark matter density and circular velocity. While statistical errors are small, the derived quantities are dominated by larger systematic uncertainties, consistent with previous findings.

Detection of the LMC-induced sloshing of the Galactic halo

Denis Erkal et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the Large Magellanic Cloud may have a massive halo, leading to an acceleration of the inner Milky Way and significant effects on our Galaxy. Through simulations and observations, it was found that the stars in the Southern hemisphere are blueshifted while those in the North are redshifted, consistent with the expected acceleration of the inner halo due to the LMC.

The mass of the Milky Way out to 100 kpc using halo stars

Alis J. Deason et al.

Summary: Using a distribution function analysis, we estimated the mass of the Milky Way out to 100 kpc by studying a large sample of halo stars. We considered systematic effects like the dynamical influence of the Large Magellanic Cloud and unrelaxed substructure. After accounting for these factors, we found the mass within 100 kpc to be approximately 6.07 x 10^11 M, with variations in total mass estimates based on different scenarios and corrections for reflex motion induced by the LMC.
