Bimodality of [α Fe]-[Fe/H] distributions is a natural outcome of dissipative collapse and disc growth in Milky Way-type galaxies

Sergey Khoperskov et al.

Summary: Chemo-dynamical simulations of Milky Way-type galaxies formation show that the high-alpha sequence originates from an early burst of star formation, while the low-alpha stellar population is the result of enriched gas slowly accreted onto a radially extended thin disc. Feedback-driven outflows during the formation of the thick disc play a crucial role in enriching the surrounding gaseous halo.
