Common envelopes in massive stars: towards the role of radiation pressure and recombination energy in ejecting red supergiant envelopes

Mike Y. M. Lau et al.

Summary: Using 3D hydrodynamical simulations, we find that massive red supergiant stars have different characteristics compared to low-mass stars during common-envelope events due to the significant support from radiation pressure. This support leads to the ejection of more mass and a larger final separation. Including radiation energy and recombination energy reveals that a substantial portion of the envelope, if not the entire envelope, could be unbound. Furthermore, the final separation increases by almost 20% due to the additional ejected material.

It has to be cool: Supergiant progenitors of binary black hole mergers from common-envelope evolution

Jakub Klencki et al.

Summary: Research suggests that BH binaries with RSG companions are needed for successful CE ejection in massive binary systems, and metallicity has a significant impact on the RSG envelopes. Merger rates of BBHs may be underestimated, and the CE channel may not be able to produce the most massive BBH systems.

Fallback Supernova Assembly of Heavy Binary Neutron Stars and Light Black Hole-Neutron Star Pairs and the Common Stellar Ancestry of GW190425 and GW200115

Alejandro Vigna-Gomez et al.

Summary: The study proposes a new formation pathway for heavy binary neutron stars and light black hole-neutron star binaries, based on simulations of supernova explosions and accretion onto neutron star companions. This pathway can explain the formation of certain gravitational-wave events and predicts the assembly of others.

The role of mass transfer and common envelope evolution in the formation of merging binary black holes

Pablo Marchant et al.

Summary: As the number of observed merging binary black holes with gravitational-wave detectors increases, accurate theoretical models are needed for comparisons and separations of contributions from multiple channels. Uncertainties remain in the stability of mass transfer and common-envelope evolution. Binary simulations suggest that successful envelope ejection occurs only after the formation of a deep convective envelope during common-envelope evolution. It is found that the critical mass ratio for instability allows for merging binary black holes to be formed via stable mass transfer across a wide range of initial orbital periods.

Tidal dissipation impact on the eccentric onset of common envelope phases in massive binary star systems

Michelle Vick et al.

Summary: Previous studies have focused on circular orbits and synchronously rotating donor stars, neglecting the possibility that tidal dissipation may not circularize the orbit before the common envelope phase. The effects of pre-common-envelope eccentricity on resulting compact binary systems need further investigation.

Observation of Gravitational Waves from Two Neutron Star-Black Hole Coalescences

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: This study reports the observation of gravitational waves from two compact binary coalescences in LIGO's and Virgo's third observing run, with properties consistent with neutron star-black hole (NSBH) binaries. The study provides detailed information on the source component masses, source luminosity distances, and more for the two events observed.

GWTC-2: Compact Binary Coalescences Observed by LIGO and Virgo during the First Half of the Third Observing Run

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: This report presents 39 candidate gravitational-wave events detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo during the first half of the third observing run (O3a) between April 1, 2019 and October 1, 2019. The events include black hole binary mergers up to a redshift of approximately 0.8 and events where the components cannot be unambiguously identified. The range of candidate event masses has expanded compared to previous catalogs, with the inclusion of binary systems with asymmetric mass ratios.
