Frosting and defrosting on the hydrophilic nylon-6 nanofiber membrane-coated surfaces

Ching-Wen Lo et al.

Summary: The study proposed using a hydrophilic nylon-6 nanofiber membrane coating to enhance deicing, which can be easily made by electrospinning. The membrane with ice nucleation sites on it can quickly remove the formed ice layer. The substantial improvement in deicing ability indicates the potential for practical applications.

Summary: The study investigated the ice nucleation on mineral particles in soil, revealing the influence of soil organic matter and biological activity on the location and manner of ice formation. Additionally, experimental results showed that mineral particles exposed to biological activity in soil exhibited enhanced ice formation at significantly lower relative humidity.

Motion of water monomers reveals a kinetic barrier to ice nucleation on graphene

Anton Tamtoegl et al.

Summary: The behavior of water monomers on a graphene surface shows cooperative motion due to repulsive forces between the monomers, increasing the monomer lifetime in a free-gas phase and inhibiting ice nucleation. These findings provide insights into the kinetic barrier of ice nucleation and offer pathways to understanding and controlling processes involved in ice formation.

The ice-vapour interface during growth and sublimation

Maria Cascajo-Castresana et al.

Summary: The study used ESEM in low-humidity atmosphere to investigate ice growth, crystallite coalescence, polycrystalline film morphology, and sublimation. It found that thick polycrystalline films are formed by the coalescence of imperfectly crystallized ice crystals, and that sublimation is driven by defects, with grain boundaries playing a significant role in the process. Discussions were also conducted on ESEM beam damage and impurities effects in the research for potential atmospherically relevant nucleators.

Control of amorphous solid water target morphology induced by deposition on a charged surface

Alexander Bespaly et al.

Summary: The research demonstrates a new approach to control the morphology of amorphous solid water microstructured targets, enhancing the coupling of high-intensity laser pulse to the target and playing an important role in laser-induced ion acceleration. By varying the surface charge on the substrate and the pressure of water vapor, multiple, dense spikes structured ASW targets with increased aspect ratio are obtained, resulting in a more efficient interaction with the laser.

Direct observation and assessment of phase states of ambient and lab-generated sub-micron particles upon humidification

Summary: This study introduces a new analytical platform that directly observes and evaluates the phase transition of particles under different relative humidity and temperature conditions, based on the aspect ratio of the particles. The results show that solid organic particles transition to semi-solid and liquid states at specific relative humidity levels.
