Effects of fructose restriction on liver steatosis (FRUITLESS); a double-blind randomized controlled trial

Nynke Simons et al.

Summary: This study found that a 6-week fructose-restricted diet led to a decrease in intrahepatic lipid content in patients with fatty liver disease, with a more pronounced effect in the intervention group. However, there were no significant differences in glucose tolerance and serum lipids between the intervention and control groups.

The Role of Fructose in Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis: Old Relationship and New Insights

Alessandro Federico et al.

Summary: Fructose, a naturally occurring simple sugar linked with glucose to form sucrose, is commonly found in hypercaloric food and beverages. Excessive fructose consumption is associated with the development and progression of NAFLD, leading to various detrimental effects on liver metabolism and potentially more severe clinical phenotypes.

Phenolics-Rich Extracts of Dietary Plants as Regulators of Fructose Uptake in Caco-2 Cells via GLUT5 Involvement

Malgorzata Zaklos-Szyda et al.

Summary: The chronic consumption of large amounts of fructose in food has been linked to hypertension and disturbances in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, leading to obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. The absorption of fructose by small intestine cells and hepatocytes is mediated by proteins such as GLUT5. Extracts from plants like B. juncea and M. chamomilla have been shown to reduce fructose uptake and downregulate GLUT5 expression, potentially through the inhibition of transcription factors TXNIP and ChREBP.
