Toward the Recovery of Platinum Group Metals from a Spent Automotive Catalyst with Supported Ionic Liquid Phases

Olga Lanaridi et al.

Summary: The polySILP material showed the capability to separate PGMs from major accompanying interferences in a single separation step, while avoiding problems arising from ionic liquid leaching in the case of SILPs. The use of supported ionic liquid phases allowed a significant reduction in the amount of required ionic liquid compared to conventional liquid-liquid separation, while preventing issues related to emulsion formation. Subsequent stripping experiments further purified the PGMs and facilitated their desorption from the solid material into a pure solution, illustrating a new and convenient approach for recycling platinum group metals through the concept of chemisorbed polySILPs.

Selective recovery of platinum by combining a novel reusable ionic liquid with electrodeposition

Muhan Chen et al.

Summary: Five new imidazolium ionic liquids were synthesized and evaluated for their efficiency in precipitating PtCl62- in HCl media. A novel mixed-ILs system showed excellent extraction efficiency for Pt(IV) from mixed metal solutions, selectively separating Pt(IV) ions from metal ions of Rh(III), Fe3+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+. Surface characterization techniques confirmed the successful electrodeposition of metallic Pt on the cathode surfaces.

Making precious metals cheap: A sonoelectrochemical - Hydrodynamic cavitation method to recycle platinum group metals from spent automotive catalysts

Eugeniu Vasile et al.

Summary: The two-step method successfully separated the nanoparticles of Pd and Pt, significantly increasing the concentrations of Pd and Pt. In the absence of hydrodynamic cavitation and using conventional electrochemistry, the recovery rates of Pt and Pd were very low. Cost analysis showed that the method could recover Pd and Pt at a lower price.
