An overview of clay-polymer nanocomposites containing bioactive compounds for food packaging applications

Dorsaf Cheikh et al.

Summary: By functionalizing clay-polymer nanocomposites with natural bioactive compounds found in plants, the physicochemical and functional properties of resulting films and coatings can be improved for potential applications in food protection. The presence of clays in food packaging provides advantages such as stabilizing bioactive compounds, controlled release, moisture barrier properties, and enhancing mechanical properties of the polymer matrix. This review highlights insights on functionalizing clay-based nanocomposites with natural additives extracted from plants for food quality and safety applications.

Nanoclay and Polystyrene Type Efficiency on the Development of Polystyrene/Montmorillonite/Oregano Oil Antioxidant Active Packaging Nanocomposite Films

Aris E. Giannakas et al.

Summary: Efforts to extend food shelf life and reduce global food waste have led to the adoption of natural biodegradable materials in food packaging production. In this study, a new packaging film was developed by mixing polystyrene with natural materials and essential oil, showing improved antimicrobial and antioxidant properties for food preservation. The material coded as PS5OO@OrgMt was identified as the most promising for food active packaging applications among the tested samples.

Nanocomposites Materials of PLA Reinforced with Nanoclays Using a Masterbatch Technology: A Study of the Mechanical Performance and Its Sustainability

Helena Oliver-Ortega et al.

Summary: Packaging accounts for about 40% of total plastic production, and there is a shift towards biopolymers in food packaging due to environmental concerns. Improving barrier properties of Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) for competition with other polymers is being researched, with a focus on dispersion. Pre-dispersion and concentrated compounds show promise in enhancing mechanical performance and sustainability of materials in food trays.
