Biochar from co-pyrolysis of urban organic wastes-investigation of carbon sink potential using ATR-FTIR and TGA

Rahul Ramesh Nair et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of biochar derived from urban organic wastes (UOW) in India to sequester carbon in soils. The chemical properties and thermal oxidative stability of biochars gained from three major UOW sources were examined. A modified thermal oxidative recalcitrance index (TORi) was proposed to evaluate the stability of these biochars. The results showed that the blend of 50% sewage sludge, 30% banana peduncles, and 20% anaerobic digestate exhibited the highest recalcitrance to become a long-term carbon sink in soil. The influence of Si, Fe, and alkaline earth metals on the biochar matrix affected its recalcitrance.
