Interactions between dietary polyphenols and aging gut microbiota: A review

Sergio Davinelli et al.

Summary: Aging leads to significant changes in gut microbiota, including decreased microbial diversity, loss of commensals, and an increase in disease-associated pathobionts, which are accelerated by lifestyle factors. Polyphenols, found in fruits and vegetables, have emerged as promising anti-aging candidates due to their ability to modulate gut microbiota and produce bioactive compounds through gut bacteria metabolism. Evidence suggests that polyphenols have selective effects on the gut microbial community during aging.

Neuroprotective Effects of Coffee Bioactive Compounds: A Review

Katarzyna Socala et al.

Summary: Coffee contains various bioactive components that are beneficial for human health, such as caffeine, polyphenols, and alkaloids. Research suggests that regular coffee consumption can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and certain types of cancer, while also potentially lowering the risk of neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Further studies are needed to fully understand the mechanisms behind these effects and the therapeutic applications of coffee bioactive components.

Mechanistic insights into the protective effects of chlorogenic acid against indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer in rats: Modulation of the cross talk between autophagy and apoptosis signaling

Maha A. E. Ahmed et al.

Summary: Chlorogenic acid (CGA) showed a dose-dependent gastroprotective effect by reversing IND-induced accumulation of autophagic vacuoles and down-regulation of related markers, while also restoring normal autolysosomal function and impairing IND-induced apoptosis through modulation of apoptotic proteins. The mechanism involves a crosstalk mediated by Akt/mTOR pathway reactivation and alleviation of IND-induced lysosomal dysfunction.

Main drivers of (poly)phenol effects on human health: metabolite production and/or gut microbiota-associated metabotypes?

Carlos E. Iglesias-Aguirre et al.

Summary: Despite high variability in individual response to (poly)phenol consumption, causal relationships between dietary (poly)phenols and health effects have been established. Various factors affecting this variability have been identified, but the final drivers for these health effects remain unclear. Potential drivers include the effects of ingested (poly)phenols in the gastrointestinal tract, bioavailable metabolites, and gut microbial ecology associated with (poly)phenol metabolism.

Caffeic acid prevents hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative damage in SH-SY5Y cell line through mitigation of oxidative stress and apoptosis

A. Ayna

Summary: This study demonstrates the protective effects of caffeic acid on hydrogen peroxide-induced neurodegeneration by reducing oxidative stress and increasing antioxidant enzyme activity. Caffeic acid may serve as a potential therapeutic compound for the treatment or prevention of neurodegenerative disorders associated with oxidative injury.
