Effect of sodium alginate coating containing clove (Syzygium Aromaticum) and lemon verbena (Aloysia Citriodora) essential oils and different packaging treatments on shelf life extension of refrigerated chicken breast

Mahzad Hosseini et al.

Summary: This study aimed to preserve the microbial quality of chicken breast during storage by using sodium alginate coating solutions with natural antimicrobials and packaging in modified atmosphere or ambient atmosphere. Results showed that coating with sodium alginate containing 0.5% clove and 0.5% Lemon Verbena in modified atmosphere packaging was the most effective in reducing bacterial counts and maintaining product quality. The combined use of alginate coating, modified atmosphere packaging, and Clove and Lemon Verbena Essential Oils showed potential for developing novel healthy meat products with improved shelf life.

Supercritical CO2-ethanol extraction of oil from green coffee beans: optimization conditions and bioactive compound identification

Paloma Barajas-Alvarez et al.

Summary: In this study, a supercritical CO2-ethanol extraction method was optimized to obtain green coffee oil rich in bioactive compounds. The extraction yield and total phenolic compound content of green coffee supercritical extract (GCSE) were evaluated using a central composite design, showing that pressure and cosolvent content significantly affected yield, while temperature and cosolvent content impacted total phenolic compound content. The optimal conditions predicted an extraction yield of 7.7% with a total phenol content of 5.4 mg gallic acid equivalent g GCSE(-1), indicating the high chemical quality and antioxidant potential of GCSE for functional ingredient use.

Evaluation of the antibacterial activity of allyl isothiocyanate, clove oil, eugenol and carvacrol against spoilage lactic acid bacteria

Hajime Takahashi et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that essential oils and their components have an inhibitory effect on spoilage lactic acid bacteria, with carvacrol and eugenol able to suppress the growth of all LAB tested. Clove oil showed varying levels of susceptibility among strains. Additionally, the addition of 5000 or 10000 mg/kg of carvacrol reduced the number of LAB in fresh sausage, with significant suppression observed at 20000 mg/kg.

Influence of post-harvesting period on quality of thyme and spearmint essential oils

Sanja Cavar Zeljkovic et al.

Summary: The quality of essential oils of common thyme and spearmint significantly decreases during long storage and following a 25-week experimental period, affecting the antioxidant activity. The first 15-20 weeks post-harvesting are crucial for maintaining the quality of the essential oils. The percentage content is not a reliable indicator of the quality of essential oil as a crop product for the food and pharmaceutical industry.
