Chemically sustainable fuel cells via layer-by-layer fabrication of sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) membranes containing cerium oxide nanoparticles

Vo Dinh Cong Tinh et al.

Summary: To facilitate the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells, the decomposition of the polymer electrolyte membrane needs to be addressed. A functional sulfonic acid group grafted onto poly(arylene ether sulfone) by sulfide linkages was synthesized to prevent degradation. Additionally, cerium oxide nanoparticles were prepared for radical scavenging. The layer-by-layer membrane containing cerium oxide showed lower voltage loss rate and maintained proton conductivity.

Highly conductive hydroxide exchange membranes containing fluorene-units tethered with dual pairs of quaternary piperidinium cations

Andrit Allushi et al.

Summary: This study focused on developing anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with high alkaline stability and hydroxide conductivity by functionalizing fluorene units with dual pairs of quaternary piperidinium cations. The AEMs with bisPip side chains demonstrated superior conductivity and alkaline stability compared to AEMs with monoPip cations per fluorene unit, highlighting the advantage of locally concentrating the cations in the polymer structure.
