Imagining the postantibiotic future: the visual culture of a global health threat

Rachel Irwin

Summary: This article explores the visual culture of global health data using antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as an example. The author examines how public health data is transformed into visualizations in forms such as animations, TED Talks, documentaries, and satire programs. The focus is on how different actors depict a future where there are limited or no effective antibiotics against bacterial infections. By analyzing the form, content, and style of the visual culture of AMR, the author reveals that these visualizations tell a story of a potential apocalypse while attempting to prevent it. The if/then structure is used to convey the message that certain actions must be taken today to avoid a post-antibiotic future with catastrophic consequences. Additionally, these narratives aim to raise awareness, prevent the further spread of AMR, and influence policy and funding decisions. The author argues that while scientific consensus is crucial, it may also limit our imagination in finding new solutions to global health challenges. Thus, it is necessary to engage social sciences and humanities in analyzing the visual culture of global health data.

A Healthy Gut for a Healthy Brain: Preclinical, Clinical and Regulatory Aspects

Carla Petrella et al.

Summary: There is a complex pathway of communications between the gut and the brain, where the microbiota can influence brain homeostasis and plasticity. Normalizing gut flora can prevent changes in behavior, suggesting the gut-brain axis as a possible target for pharmacological and dietary strategies.

B. Barros Cota et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the antifungal activity of Chamaecostus cuspidatus rhizome extracts against Candida and Trichophyton species. The extracts showed antifungal, fungicidal, and antibiofilm effects with greater selectivity for fungal cells. This suggests potential clinical applications in managing superficial mycoses caused by these fungal species.

Diosgenin Derivatives as Potential Antitumor Agents: Synthesis, Cytotoxicity, and Mechanism of Action

Hong Yin et al.

Summary: Thirty-two new diosgenin derivatives were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for their cytotoxic activities, with compound 8 showing excellent cytotoxic activity against HepG2 cancer cells and relatively low toxicity against normal cells, indicating some selectivity. Studies suggested compound 8 may target p38 alpha mitogen-activated protein kinase and be a promising lead compound for new antitumor agents.

Myricetin as an Antivirulence Compound Interfering with a Morphological Transformation into Coccoid Forms and Potentiating Activity of Antibiotics against Helicobacter pylori

Pawel Krzyzek et al.

Summary: The natural compound myricetin has been shown to slow down the morphological transformation of H. pylori into coccoid forms and reduce biofilm formation. In addition, it can synergistically interact with all five antibiotics commonly used against H. pylori, leading to a significant reduction in their minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). Furthermore, myricetin can interfere with the expression of genes related to H. pylori morphogenesis, particularly those involved in the spiral-to-coccoid transition.

Amentoflavone as an Ally in the Treatment of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: Analysis of Its Antioxidant/Prooxidant Mechanisms

Yasmin Silva Rizk et al.

Summary: Treatment of leishmaniasis is challenging due to limited chemotherapy options with toxicity and adverse effects. The research on antileishmanial activity of amentoflavone, a biflavonoid derived from plant, showed promising results in reducing parasite load and affecting inflammatory markers in mice infected with L. amazonensis. Amentoflavone demonstrated potential as a treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis by balancing inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses at the infection site.

The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of Antibiotics: Methods, Interpretation, Clinical Relevance

Beata Kowalska-Krochmal et al.

Summary: The inefficiency of medical therapies for curing patients with bacterial infections calls for active search for new therapeutic strategies and careful selection of antibiotics based on various parameters including microbiological considerations. Proper assessment of Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) is crucial for optimizing treatment strategies and ensuring the effectiveness of infection therapy. This paper discusses methods for MIC estimation, factors influencing MIC results, and possibilities of utilizing MIC in clinical practice with consideration of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic parameters.

Antibiofilm and Antimicrobial-Enhancing Activity of Chelidonium majus and Corydalis cheilanthifolia Extracts against Multidrug-Resistant Helicobacter pylori

Pawel Krzyzek et al.

Summary: This study focused on determining the antibacterial activity of plant extracts from the Papaveraceae family against H. pylori, revealing strong activity in extracts from Corydalis cheilanthifolia and Chelidonium majus. These extracts showed synergy with amoxicillin and 3-bromopyruvate, and additive effects with sertraline. The combination of these plant extracts with synthetic antimicrobials absorbed into bacterial cellulose carriers showed promising results in fighting against H. pylori biofilms.
