Risk of mortality and complications in patients with schizophrenia and diabetes mellitus: population-based cohort study

Joe Kwun Nam Chan et al.

Summary: Schizophrenia patients with co-occurring diabetes have a higher risk of excess mortality, particularly among men and older age groups. They also have a higher rate of metabolic complications, lower rate of microvascular complications, and comparable rate of macrovascular complications compared to patients with diabetes only. Schizophrenia is associated with elevated all-cause mortality after macrovascular and microvascular complications in patients with diabetes.

Death Associated With Coronavirus (COVID-19) Infection in Individuals With Severe Mental Disorders in Sweden During the Early Months of the Outbreak-An Exploratory Cross-Sectional Analysis of a Population-Based Register Study

Martin Maripuu et al.

Summary: Individuals with severe mental disorders (SMD) are at higher risk of COVID-19 associated death, especially those in the age groups of 60-79 and with cardiovascular diseases. Even SMD patients without any of the risk factors studied have an increased risk of death. Future studies should further explore the relationship between SMD and COVID-19 associated deaths, particularly in terms of comorbidities.

A meta-analysis: The mortality and severity of COVID-19 among patients with mental disorders

Ahmad A. Toubasi et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis found that pre-diagnosis with mental disorders is associated with an increased risk of COVID-19 mortality and severity. Patients with schizophrenia, schizotypal, and delusional disorders had higher mortality rates compared to those with mood disorders. It is recommended to prioritize vaccination for patients with mental disorders alongside healthcare providers and the elderly.

Inflammatory profiles across the spectrum of disease reveal a distinct role for GM-CSF in severe COVID-19

Ryan S. Thwaites et al.

Summary: The study found that levels of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines gradually increased with the severity of COVID-19, with IL-6 and GM-CSF playing central roles in the pathogenesis of the disease. Comparisons with samples from fatal influenza patients revealed that GM-CSF was prominent only in COVID-19, further identifying key factors that characterize and distinguish severe and fatal COVID-19.
