Diminished levels of the chemokine fractalkine in post-mortem prefrontal cortex in schizophrenia but not bipolar disorder

Sarah L. Hill et al.

Summary: This study found significantly lower levels of CX3CL1 protein in SCZ patients compared to controls, suggesting impaired neuron-microglia crosstalk in this disorder. Additionally, a significant correlation between CX3CR1 protein levels and the pre-synaptic protein SNAP-25 levels was observed, indicating an aberrant association between microglial function and synaptic density in SCZ.

Spine dynamics of PSD-95-deficient neurons in the visual cortex link silent synapses to structural cortical plasticity

Rashad Yusifov et al.

Summary: Key periods in brain development, known as Critical periods, are crucial for synaptic connection refinement. A protein called PSD-95 plays a major role in the maturation of synapses. Impaired PSD-95 function affects spine dynamics, leading to altered structural plasticity.

Effects of chronic exposure to haloperidol, olanzapine or lithium on SV2A and NLGN synaptic puncta in the rat frontal cortex

Els F. Halff et al.

Summary: PET studies using SV2A radioligand provide evidence for synaptic dysfunction in the cingulate and frontal cortex of schizophrenia patients. Chronic exposure to antipsychotics did not affect SV2A levels, while chronic lithium exposure increased NLGN density. Further research is needed to understand the functional consequences of these changes.
