Comparative studies of urolithins and their phase II metabolites on macrophage and neutrophil functions

Aneta Bobowska et al.

Summary: Comparative studies were conducted on the effects of urolithin A, iso-urolithin A, and urolithin B, as well as their glucuronides, on processes associated with the inflammatory response. Urolithin A was found to be the most active metabolite in inhibiting the inflammatory response, while the glucuronide conjugates were not effective in this regard. Phase II metabolism was shown to diminish the pharmacological properties of urolithins.

Xuhuiqun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the pharmacokinetic variables of red raspberry (RR) (poly)phenols in adults with prediabetes and insulin resistance compared to metabolically healthy adults. The results showed that individuals with prediabetes and insulin resistance had a lower capacity to generate certain metabolites compared to the reference group, and some of these metabolites were negatively correlated with postprandial insulin concentrations. Further research is needed to understand the role of RR (poly)phenols in insulin management.

Carlos E. Iglesias-Aguirre et al.

Summary: Despite high variability in individual response to (poly)phenol consumption, causal relationships between dietary (poly)phenols and health effects have been established. Various factors affecting this variability have been identified, but the final drivers for these health effects remain unclear. Potential drivers include the effects of ingested (poly)phenols in the gastrointestinal tract, bioavailable metabolites, and gut microbial ecology associated with (poly)phenol metabolism.
