Connecting high-throughput biodiversity inventories: Opportunities for a site-based genomic framework for global integration and synthesis

Paula Arribas et al.

Summary: High-throughput sequencing technology is increasingly used for biodiversity characterization and monitoring, offering a deeper understanding of global biodiversity when applied across broad geographical scales. International collaborative efforts are needed to maximize the potential of HTS data for global integration and synthesis, particularly in establishing an effective Genomic Observatories network for terrestrial biodiversity integration.

Biotic signals associated with benthic impacts of salmon farms from eDNA metabarcoding of sediments

Xiaoping He et al.

Summary: This study utilized environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding to evaluate benthic communities at six salmon farms in British Columbia, Canada, comparing biotic signals associated with salmon farming impacts from two data sources. The research found that alpha diversity parameters decreased near fish cage edges and were negatively correlated with pore-water sulphide concentration. The study demonstrated the potential of eDNA metabarcoding for assessing the spatial extent of benthic impacts and developing local biotic indices related to organic enrichment.

Estimating the genetic diversity of Pacific salmon and trout using multigene eDNA metabarcoding

Kevin Weitemier et al.

Summary: Genetic diversity is crucial for species conservation and management, and this study analyzed mitochondrial genetic diversity in four Oncorhynchus species using multigene metabarcode sequences. Variations in genetic diversity were found among species, with unique haplotypes present in certain regions. Characterizing genetic diversity at multiple loci provides essential information for conservation efforts and genetic management.

Within-Season Changes in Land-Use Impact Pest Abundance in Smallholder African Cassava Production Systems

Andrew Kalyebi et al.

Summary: This study investigated how seasonal land-use changes impacted B. tabaci and its parasitoids in an agricultural landscape in Uganda. The dominant species of B. tabaci on cassava was identified as Sub-Saharan Africa 1 (SSA1), and the highest abundance of B. tabaci SSA1 nymphs in cassava fields occurred at times when landscapes had large areas of weeds, low to moderate areas of maize, and low areas of banana. These results can guide the development of land-use strategies for smallholder farmers to manage whitefly pests.
