Landscape and taxon age are associated with differing patterns of hybridization in two Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) subgenera

T. P. Robins et al.

Summary: This study investigated hybridization patterns in Eucalyptus species of Western Australia's Stirling Range and found that patterns differ between the Eucalyptus and Symphyomyrtus subgenera. Hybridization was reduced in subg. Eucalyptus on older landscapes, while there were high levels of introgression in subg. Symphyomyrtus on younger landscapes. This suggests that clade divergence times, landscape age, and clonality play important roles in driving speciation and hybridization patterns in Eucalyptus.

Hybrid speciation via inheritance of alternate alleles of parental isolating genes

Zefu Wang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that reproductive isolation in a homoploid hybrid plant species originates from the inheritance of alternate alleles at genes that determine parental premating isolation. The hybrid species inherits isolating major genes related to flowering time from one parent and genes related to iron tolerance from the other, leading to reproductive isolation through different mechanisms.

Different rates of pollen and seed gene flow cause branch-length and geographic cytonuclear discordance within Asian butternuts

Lin-Lin Xu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that in Asian butternuts, the chloroplast genome shows deeper discordance compared to the nuclear genome, as well as steeper geographic discordance in the contact zone. This suggests a critical role of sex-biased dispersal in causing discordance between the nuclear and plastid genome of Asian butternuts, highlighting the importance of considering asymmetric gene flow in future studies of cytonuclear discordance.

Comparative phylogeography of Juglans regia and J. mandshurica combining organellar and nuclear DNA markers to assess genetic diversity and introgression in regions of sympatry

Meng Dang et al.

Summary: The study found that even when sympatric, walnut species rarely introgress, indicating strong hybridization barriers between them. The two species occupy distinct ecological niches, and sympatric populations may be the result of recent postglacial population expansion.
