Auditory and visual P300 event-related potentials to detect minimal hepatic encephalopathy

Angel Daniel Santana-Vargas et al.

Summary: This study compared the diagnostic features of auditory and visual P300 in detecting minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE). The results showed that the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of auditory P300 were similar to those of critical flicker frequency (CFF), making it useful in differentiating patients with MHE. However, visual P300 was found to be unsuitable for detecting MHE.

Risk of recurrent hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver cirrhosis: a German registry study

Maria M. Gabriel et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the natural course of patients with hepatic encephalopathy after a recent episode, and to identify risk factors for HE recurrence in Germany. Patients recruited by liver transplant centers, those with frequent HE relapses, and those with abnormal PHES results were found to have an increased risk for hospitalization. The PHES test may assist in detecting, monitoring, and stratifying the risk of recurrent HE.

Summary: The study found that in patients without a history of overt hepatic encephalopathy, neuropsychological and neurophysiological tests can predict the occurrence of hepatic encephalopathy, while in patients with a history of overt hepatic encephalopathy, the severity of liver dysfunction plays a larger role in the development of hepatic encephalopathy.

Patients with Minimal Hepatic Encephalopathy Show Altered Thermal Sensitivity and Autonomic Function

Dalia Rega et al.

Summary: Cirrhotic patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) may experience alterations in thermal, vibration, and/or heat pain sensitivity, which are related to cognitive and motor deficits. Studies have found that MHE patients generally exhibit lower sensory abilities and attention deficits compared to cirrhotic patients without MHE, with these alterations appearing early on in the disease process.

Summary: S-ANT1 is an important screening tool for MHE in cirrhotic patients. A three-step screening strategy based on S-ANT1 and PHES is conducive to the identification of MHE in clinical practice, providing sensitivity and specificity thresholds at 90%, and cut-off values to rule out or rule in patients for further evaluation.
