Addressing male sexual and reproductive health in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak

A. Sansone et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic poses a significant challenge to healthcare systems globally, with severe complications such as micro-thrombosis and DIC. Survivors of COVID-19 may face long-term consequences, including the development of erectile dysfunction, adding to the burden of the disease.

Epidemiological and Clinical Characteristics of Deceased COVID-19 Patients

Mohammed Badedi et al.

Summary: Deaths due to COVID-19 in hospitalized patients in Jazan Region, Saudi Arabia were more common in males and individuals over 65 years old. Comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, heart disease, and chronic kidney disease were prevalent among deceased patients. Advanced age, smoking, and respiratory failure were significant predictors of mortality during the early stay in hospitals.

Co-morbidity and blood group type risk in coronavirus disease 2019 patients: A case-control study

Mohammed Badedi et al.

Summary: This study in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, found that older age and comorbidities, especially diabetes mellitus, increased the risk of death in COVID-19 patients. Although no significant association was found between a specific ABO blood group and mortality risk, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and obesity were significantly associated with death due to COVID-19.

Pulmonary fibrosis 4 months after COVID-19 is associated with severity of illness and blood leucocyte telomere length

Claire F. McGroder et al.

Summary: Patients who underwent mechanical ventilation for severe COVID-19 are more likely to develop fibrotic-like radiographic abnormalities after hospitalisation. The severity of initial illness, duration of mechanical ventilation, lactate dehydrogenase on admission, and leucocyte telomere length are independent risk factors for these abnormalities, which are correlated with lung function, cough, and frailty measures, but not with dyspnoea.

Rasha Mostafa Mohamed Ali et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify potential cases of post-COVID-19 pulmonary fibrosis early in order to prevent or modify such disabling complications, with factors like old age, cigarette smoking, high CT severity score, and long-term mechanical ventilation being potential predictors of lung fibrosis.

Zarir Farokh Udwadia et al.

Summary: A 75-year-old female developed severe pulmonary fibrosis within 1 month of acute severe COVID-19 pneumonia despite being on steroids during most of her hospital stay. The effectiveness of antifibrotic drugs in this case is still uncertain and will require large clinical trials for confirmation.
