Model-independent strength-reduction factor for effect of spatial variability on tunnel with improved soil surrounds

Yutao Pan et al.

Summary: The study examines the effect of constitutive models on the strength reduction factor for tunnels with improved soil surrounds. Results show that the Mohr-Coulomb model provides the lowest critical stress release ratio, but the most conservative values of strength reduction factor needed to account for spatial variability are generally taken by either the C3 or Mohr-Coulomb model, depending on drainage condition and geometric configuration.

Prediction of undrained shear strength using extreme gradient boosting and random forest based on Bayesian optimization

Wengang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study applies XGBoost and RF methods to predict the USS of soft clays, showing that these approaches outperform traditional methods. Bayesian optimization is used to determine model hyperparameters, leading to more accurate and robust models.

Prediction of Disc Cutter Life During Shield Tunneling with AI via the Incorporation of a Genetic Algorithm into a GMDH-Type Neural Network

Khalid Elbaz et al.

Summary: A new model was proposed in this study to estimate disc cutter life by integrating GMDH-type neural network with a genetic algorithm, which can predict disc cutter life with high accuracy. Results from a case study in China show that the penetration rate significantly influences disc cutter life, and the findings can be beneficial in both the planning and construction stages of shield tunneling.

Application of LSTM approach for modelling stress-strain behaviour of soil

Ning Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new trial using LSTM deep learning method to consider soil stress history and reproduce soil stress-strain behavior, comparing its performance with traditional neural networks. The results show that LSTM outperforms feedforward and feedback neural networks in terms of accuracy and convergence rate, discovering a new phenomenon of bias at low stress levels.
