Noninvasive ventilation for acute hypoxemic respiratory failure in patients with COVID-19

Sergey N. Avdeev et al.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study found that the success rate of NIV application for COVID-19 patients with AHRF was 72.1%, and the mortality rate of patients who failed NIV was 24.6%. Older patients with higher physiological indicators before NIV treatment were more likely to fail NIV therapy.

Case Fatality Rates for Patients with COVID-19 Requiring Invasive Mechanical Ventilation A Meta-analysis

Zheng Jie Lim et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the case fatality rate of COVID-19 patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation is around 45%, but varying reporting methods result in a wide range of fatality rates across studies. Fatality rates are higher in older patients and in early pandemic epicenters.

Effectiveness and safety of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation in the treatment of COVID-19-associated acute hypoxemic respiratory failure: a single center, non-ICU setting experience

Antonio Faraone et al.

Summary: NIPPV showed effectiveness in a substantial percentage of COVID-19 patients with AHRF, especially in those without treatment limitations. In this study, the use of corticosteroids and the increase in the PaO2/FiO(2) ratio within 24-48 hours after NIPPV initiation were predictors of NIPPV success. The risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection among healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients was low during the study period.

Non-invasive positive pressure ventilation versus endotracheal intubation in treatment of COVID-19 patients requiring ventilatory support

Pia Daniel et al.

Summary: This study compared all-cause 30-day mortality for COVID-19 patients with respiratory failure who underwent intubation first, intubation after NIV, or NIV only. The results showed that utilizing NIV as the initial intervention was associated with significant survival benefit, and mortality rate for patients intubated after NIV was not worse than those who underwent intubation as their initial intervention.

Effectiveness of noninvasive ventilation in COVID-19 related-acute respiratory distress syndrome

Francesco Menzella et al.

Summary: This study evaluated clinical data and outcomes of NIV in patients with COVID-19 ARDS, showing that NIV can avoid intubation in almost half of the patients.

Non-invasive ventilation for SARS-CoV-2 acute respiratory failure: a subanalysis from the HOPE COVID-19 registry

Maurizio Bertaina et al.

Summary: The study found that patients treated with NIV for SARS-CoV-2-related ARF had worse clinical and laboratory signs at presentation compared to those receiving other non-invasive oxygen strategies. Despite this, more than half of the patients treated with NIV survived without the need for intubation, suggesting that NIV may be a viable strategy in cases of limited intensive care resources.

Clinical characteristics and day-90 outcomes of 4244 critically ill adults with COVID-19: a prospective cohort study

Matthieu Schmidt et al.

Summary: Among more than 4000 critically ill patients with COVID-19 admitted to our ICUs, 90-day mortality was 31% and decreased from 42 to 25% over the study period. Mortality was higher in older, diabetic, obese and severe ARDS patients.
