Small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements for the prevention of child malnutrition and promotion of healthy development: overview of individual participant data meta-analysis and programmatic implications

Kathryn G. Dewey et al.

Summary: Research showed that small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements can improve growth, development, anemia, and micronutrient status in children aged 6-24 months. The benefits were greater in populations with higher stunting burden or anemia prevalence, and among acutely malnourished children. Co-packaging these supplements with interventions targeting response constraints could lead to greater impact in reducing child mortality and addressing malnutrition.

Characteristics that modify the effect of small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplementation on child growth: an individual participant data meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Kathryn G. Dewey et al.

Summary: Meta-analysis showed that providing small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNSs) can reduce child stunting and wasting, especially among specific subgroups such as girls, later-born children, and those living in households with improved sanitation.

Small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements for children age 6-24 months: a systematic review and individual participant data meta-analysis of effects on developmental outcomes and effect modifiers

Elizabeth L. Prado et al.

Summary: Small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements have positive effects on language, social-emotional, and motor scores in young children, especially in populations with a high prevalence of child stunting. Certain groups of children in higher-risk environments have a greater potential to benefit from these supplements.

Effective interventions to address maternal and child malnutrition: an update of the evidence

Emily C. Keats et al.

Summary: Research evidence shows that malnutrition continues to affect women and children, especially in low-income and middle-income countries. Effective interventions for malnutrition, such as antenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation, supplementary food, and community-based approaches, have been identified. Additionally, integrated interventions are highlighted as the most effective for preventing and managing childhood obesity.
