Grain size dependence of annealing strengthening of an extruded Mg-Gd-Zn alloy subjected to pre-compression deformation

Qinghang Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the pre-strain annealing strengthening effect on extruded Mg-1.0Gd-1.5 Zn (wt.%) alloy with different grain sizes. The microstructure evolution of the alloy under various conditions was examined using various microscopy techniques. The results showed a grain size-dependent pre-strain annealing strengthening effect in the alloy, with larger grain sizes exhibiting higher strengthening effect due to hindrance of twin growth and increased nucleation of new twins.

Summary: The addition of different concentrations of Y significantly affected the mechanical properties, grain-scale slip activity, and orientation heterogeneity of extruded Mg alloys during tension and compression. Increasing Y content led to noticeable changes in slip activity, while tension-compression asymmetry also showed variations.

Effects of 14H LPSO phase on the dynamic recrystallization and work hardening behaviors of an extruded Mg-Zn-Y-Mn alloy

Jianqiang Hao et al.

Summary: The Mg-Zn-Y-Mn alloys were processed with different heat treatment techniques and extruded, resulting in specimens with and without the 14H LPSO phase. The alloy with 14H LPSO phase showed finer grains and stronger basal texture, leading to higher strength but lower elongation compared to the alloy without 14H LPSO phase. The presence of 14H LPSO phase hindered the nucleation and growth of DRX grains and affected the dynamic recrystallization and work hardening behaviors in extruded alloys.

Enhanced strength and corrosion resistant of Mg-Gd-Y-Al alloys by LPSO phases with different Al content

Chen Su et al.

Summary: The study investigated the Mg-8.5Gd-5Y-xAl (x=0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1.1 wt%) alloys in terms of their microstructure, mechanical properties, damping capacities, and corrosion properties. The results showed that the Mg-8.5Gd-5Y-0.2Al alloy exhibited the best mechanical properties, damping performance, and the lowest corrosion rate. The presence of LPSO phase contributed to enhanced mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

Synergistically improved damping, elastic modulus and mechanical properties of rolled Mg-8Li-4Y-2Er-2Zn-0.6Zr alloy with twins and long-period stacking ordered phase

Dan Wang et al.

Summary: The Mg-8Li-4Y-2Er-2Zn-0.6Zr alloy exhibits high damping capacity, tensile strength and elastic modulus after heat treatment and cold rolling processes. The introduction of LPSO phase and formation of twins during cold rolling contribute to the improvement in damping capacity and tensile strength. The high elastic modulus of the cold-rolled alloy can be attributed to the effects of LPSO phase and cold rolling.

Quantitative kink boundaries strengthening effect of Mg-Y-Zn alloy containing LPSO phase

Yuto Nakasuji et al.

Summary: This study quantified the kink-band strengthening effect in a Mg-9%Y-6%Zn alloy through uniaxial hot compression. The increase in hardness due to kink-band strengthening was found to be closely related to the number of kink boundaries beneath the indentation. The estimated kink-band strengthening values from microscopic analysis were similar to those obtained from prior macroscopic analysis.

Combined effects of LPSO orientation and α-Mg texture on tensile anisotropy of an extruded Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloy

Xiaojie Zhou et al.

Summary: The combined effects of LPSO orientation and alpha-Mg texture on tensile anisotropy were investigated, with the extrusion direction showing optimal mechanical properties, the 45 degrees direction exhibiting high elongation, and the transverse direction having inferior strength and elongation simultaneously. LPSO orientation contributes to strength anisotropy through different load-bearing strengthening effects along different tensile axes, while alpha-Mg texture contributes to strength anisotropy through stronger grain boundary strengthening effects. However, LPSO orientation, rather than alpha-Mg texture, accounts for ductility anisotropy.

Deformation mechanisms of basal slip, twinning and non-basal slips in Mg-Y alloy by micropillar compression

Na Li et al.

Summary: The addition of Y element in Mg-2 wt.% Y alloy results in a more balanced deformation compared to pure Mg, with different mechanisms of deformation observed in basal slip, twin growth, and prismatic-slip favorable orientation. The high-temperature strengthening in Mg-Y alloy is mainly attributed to dislocation decomposition and Y segregation at stacking faults.

Deformation-induced dissolution of long-period stacking ordered structures and its re-precipitation in a Mg-Gd-Zn-Mn alloy

Ning Su et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the dissolution, refinement, and re-precipitation of LPSO structure/SFs in an Mg-Gd-Zn-Mn alloy through hot extrusion. The results suggest that refinement is dominated by the misalignment and re-dissolution mechanisms, with dislocation slips and rapid solute atom diffusion playing key roles. The evolution model of LPSO structure/SFs during continuous dynamic recrystallization is proposed based on the findings.
