Fracture behavior of additively printed ABS: Effects of print architecture and loading rate

John P. Isaac et al.

Summary: This research investigates the dynamic fracture behaviors of ABS 3D printed parts, comparing the results of different print architectures under static and dynamic loading conditions. By utilizing a modified-Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus and Digital Image Correlation technology, the study reveals the impact of different architectures on crack growth behavior.

A comparative investigation on the microstructure and mechanical properties of additively manufactured aluminum alloys

Muztahid Muhammad et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the microstructure and mechanical properties of various aluminum alloys fabricated through additive manufacturing, finding that LB-PBF Scalmalloy exhibits the highest strength and fatigue resistance. Surface micro-notches and volumetric defects are identified as the primary sources of fatigue crack initiation in the investigated alloys.

Measurement of mixed-mode fracture characteristics of an epoxy-based adhesive using a hybrid digital image correlation (DIC) and finite elements (FE) approach

A. Taylor Owens et al.

Summary: This study investigates the semi-circular beam (SCB) geometry for studying mixed-mode fracture of a rubber-toughened epoxy-based adhesive material, with the critical stress intensity factors estimated to be 1.19 MPa/v root m for mode I and 1.46 MPa/v root m for mode II. The effects of friction at supports and unintended support asymmetry on stress intensity factors are critically assessed, and various techniques for mapping measured displacement data onto finite element models are discussed to reliably extract fracture parameters. Recommendations are provided for best practices using this geometry and hybrid technique for extracting fracture parameters.
