Giant hardening response in AlMgZn(Cu) alloys

Summary: This study presents a thermomechanical processing concept that utilizes the full industrial application potential of AlMgZn(Cu) alloys. The beneficial linkage of alloy design and processing achieves a balance between high mechanical strength and good formability while addressing the need for economically feasible processing times. The alloys investigated show high formability and a rapid hardening response, with significant enhancement by the addition of Cu, after short pre-aging treatments and final heat treatments.

Enhanced ductility of Mg?1Zn?0.2Zr alloy with dilute Ca addition achieved by activation of non-basal slip and twinning

Summary: In this study, a Mg?1Zn?0.2Zr (ZK10) alloy sheet was prepared by multi-pass hot rolling and annealing, with the addition of dilute Ca to tailor the basal texture and reduce plastic anisotropy. Microstructural characterizations showed improved ductility due to the occurrence of pyramidal c+a slip in the deformed alloys. This work may offer a new strategy for developing wrought Mg alloys with enhanced ductility.

Summary: The co-segregation behaviors of Zn and Ca at {10 (1) over bar2} and {10 (1) over bar1} twin boundaries were investigated, showing an enhanced propensity for TB segregation in Mg-Zn-Ca alloys with increasing Zn contents. Furthermore, strain field analysis demonstrated the role of elastic strain relief in promoting TB segregation. These results are beneficial for selecting elements to tailor twin properties and developing new high-performance Mg alloys.
