The simultaneous improvements of strength and ductility in additive manufactured Ni-based superalloy via controlling cellular subgrain microstructure

Yanan Zhao et al.

Summary: Fine cellular subgrain structure can be formed during Selective Laser Melting (SLM) manufacturing of IN718 alloy, and it can improve the mechanical properties by promoting the precipitation of γ'' second phase nanoparticles. The reserved cellular subgrain structure in the homogenized samples can hinder dislocation motion, leading to increased strength and ductility of the final prepared alloy, exceeding the mechanical properties standards of wrought IN718 alloy.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructure and mechanical performances of Inconel 718 at elevated temperature, utilizing heat treatment methods to regulate the microstructure and optimize mechanical properties. The results showed that heat-treated samples exhibited superior creep rupture performance and tensile strength compared to wrought samples, with a specific heat treatment scheme yielding the best mechanical properties at 650 degrees C.

A recrystallization heat-treatment to reduce deformation anisotropy of additively manufactured Inconel 718

Nadia Kouraytem et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the suitability of a solutionizing recrystallization heat-treatment in improving the yield strength and reducing deformation anisotropy of laser powder-bed fusion Inconel 718. Results showed an increase in grain size, decrease in texture, and formation of nano-precipitates in the RC condition, leading to an increase in yield strength and decrease in deformation anisotropy compared to the AB condition. Overall, the RC heat-treatment showed promising results in transitioning L-PBF parts from research laboratory to commercial implementation.

Summary: The study found that a longer hold time at 1100 degrees C during solid solution heat treatment has a significant impact on complete recrystallization and hardness retention. A high density of annealing twins evolved during the 3-hour solid solution treatment, with slight variations as the treatment time increases.
