Combinatorial fluorapatite-based scaffolds substituted with strontium, magnesium and silicon ions for mending bone defects

Nasim Golafshan et al.

Summary: This study synthesized strontium modified fluorapatite (Sr-FAp) and magnesium silicon modified fluorapatite (Mg-SiFAp) bioceramics through mechanical alloying methodology. The doped elements decreased the crystallinity of FAp and enhanced osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs. In vivo studies showed that strontium ion significantly promoted bone formation in fluorapatite.

Magnetic PLGA microspheres loaded with SPIONs promoted the reconstruction of bone defects through regulating the bone mesenchymal stem cells under an external magnetic field

Ying-Zheng Zhao et al.

Summary: The encapsulation of SPIONs into PLGA microspheres has been shown to improve their bone repair effects and promote the osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. In in vivo experiments, the combination of PFe-II microspheres with an external MF significantly increased the bone density, trabecular thickness, and bone tissue volume at the defect zone.

Mn-containing bioceramics inhibit osteoclastogenesis and promote osteoporotic bone regeneration via scavenging ROS

Jianmei Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that Mn-containing bioceramics can scavenge ROS, inhibit osteoclastogenesis, promote osteoblast differentiation, and accelerate bone regeneration under osteoporotic conditions. The Mn-TCP bioceramics have the potential to be an ideal biomaterial for treating osteoporotic bone defects.

The recent advances in scaffolds for integrated periodontal regeneration

Hyun Nyun Woo et al.

Summary: The periodontium, composed of multiple tissues like cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone, surrounds and supports the tooth, but can be damaged by chronic periodontal disease leading to tooth loss. Various biomaterials have been used in the treatment of periodontally diseased teeth, with tissue engineering scaffolds being recently developed for the regeneration of damaged periodontal tissues. Technologies for scaffold fabrication have advanced in recent years, from supporting healing of single tissues to guiding integrated regeneration of the entire periodontium.

Magneto-sensitive decellularized bone matrix with or without low frequency-pulsed electromagnetic field exposure for the healing of a critical-size bone defect

Mahmut Parmaksiz et al.

Summary: Bioactive ECM-based materials such as DBM and DBM/MNP have shown potential in treating critical-size bone defects by promoting new bone formation and angiogenesis. The use of LF-PEMF further enhances the regeneration capacity of these materials, as evidenced by in vitro and in vivo studies.

Comparison of amniotic membrane versus the induced membrane for bone regeneration in long bone segmental defects using calcium phosphate cement loaded with BMP-2

Mathilde Fenelon et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the combination of the human amniotic membrane with a bone substitute can effectively induce bone formation and achieve satisfactory healing of critical bone defects without the need for autograft or membrane covering. There was no significant difference between the two-step induced membrane procedure and the single-step approach, but the tested membranes did not enhance bone healing compared to the CPC/BMP2 group.
