Experimental and Finite Element Wear Study of Silicon Nitride Against Alumina for Hip Implants with Bio-Lubricant for Various Gait Activities

S. Shankar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the friction and wear behavior of silicon nitride sliding against alumina bearing components under high gait loads through experiments and finite element analysis. The results showed that the silicon nitride and alumina combination exhibited lower friction and wear coefficients under high loads, making it a suitable choice for hip joint replacement in physically demanding activities.

Zirconia-toughened alumina coated Ti6Al4V via additive manufacturing

Summary: The use of Ti64 alloy reinforced with ZTA can effectively address the galvanic-induced corrosion failure issue when coupling CoCr alloy femoral heads with titanium hip stems. After parameter optimization, the Ti64 + 5wt.%ZTA (5ZTA) composition showed a more reliable interface, reduced porosity, and increased hardness.
