The study compared the optical excitation and emission spectra of trivalent europium (Eu3+) ions in Bi2ZnOB2O6 in both crystal and glass phases, finding strong orange-red emissions in both phases. The results suggest that Eu3+:BZBO has the potential to be a promising emitter of orange-red luminescence in both crystal and glass phases.
Comparison of optical excitation and emission spectra of trivalent europium (Eu3+) ions in Bi2ZnOB2O6 in both crystal and glass phase was performed. Emission and excitation spectra were studied at low (10 K) and at room temperature. Strong, orange-red emissions of Eu3+ centred at 592 and 615 nm originate mainly from the D-5(0) -> F-7(1) and D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transitions, respectively, both in the crystal as well as in a glass phase of the material. The Omega(2,4,6) parameters as well as radiative lifetimes of the D-5(0) states were calculated based upon the Judd-Ofelt formalism. The calculated values were compared with the measured values for D-5(0) level. The obtained results indicated that Eu3+:BZBO is a promising emitter of orange-red luminescence in a crystal as well as in a glass phase.
