This study successfully enhanced the antibacterial ability of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles through cosubstitution and dual deposition methods, demonstrating a significant improvement in the antibacterial performance of HA.
Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a famous bioceramic. Nevertheless, weak antibacterial ability prevents the further application of HA. In the present work, hydroxyapatite nanoparticle (nano-HA) was duplex modified using cosubstitution and dual deposition to improve its antibacterial ability. Nano-HA with a pure HA structure and co-substituted with copper and zinc ions was obtained by a modified precipitation method. Zinc oxide and copper nanoparticles were successfully deposited on the surface of the co-substituted nano-HA using a two-step liquid chemical reduction method. The result of element analysis demonstrates that the co-substitution treatment improves the subsequent dual deposition effect. The result of the antibacterial test indicates that the duplex modification significantly promotes the antibacterial ability of HA.
