In situ and ex situ studies on thermal decomposition process of hydromagnesite Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2•4H2O

Gen-ichiro Yamamoto et al.

Summary: During the thermal decomposition of hydromagnesite, significant changes were observed in the crystal structure, with lattice parameters showing different trends with increasing temperature. Structural collapse and chemical reactions occurred above 280 degrees C without nucleation and growth of crystal phases up to 425 degrees C.

Crystal structure of nesquehonite, MgCO3•3H(D)2O by neutron diffraction and effect of pH on structural formulas of nesquehonite

Gen-ichiro Yamamoto et al.

Summary: Neutron diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and thermal analysis were used to investigate the composition, structure, and formation conditions of magnesium carbonate hydrate nesquehonite. The crystal structure was confirmed to be monoclinic, with refinement results showing coordination of deuterium atoms to specific oxygen atoms as water molecules. The inclusion of three water molecules in the structure suggests a revised structural formula for nesquehonite.
