The role of shellfish in human subsistence during the Mesolithic of Atlantic Europe: An approach from meat yield estimations

Asier Garcia-Escarzaga et al.

Summary: Despite the increasing number of investigations on the Mesolithic period in Atlantic Europe, information on the role of shellfish in human subsistence strategies remains limited. A study conducted in northern Iberia over three years found that mollusc meat yield contributed at least 20% of the meat yield obtained from ungulates in archaeological sites, indicating a greater dietary importance of shellfish during the Mesolithic than previously recognized.

Ingestion and toxicity of microplastics in the freshwater gastropod Lymnaea stagnalis: No microplastic-induced effects alone or in combination with copper

Annkatrin Weber et al.

Summary: The study investigated the ingestion, excretion, and toxicity of microplastics in freshwater gastropod Lymnaea stagnalis. It was found that the intake and excretion of microplastics depended on particle size and exposure duration, with minimal effects on survival, reproduction, and oxidative stress in the snails. Exposure to microplastics did not exacerbate the reproductive toxicity of copper and showed comparable effects to diatomite particles. The tolerance towards microplastics in L. stagnalis may be attributed to adaptation to particle-rich environments or general stress resilience.

Microplastics in three typical benthic species from the Arctic: Occurrence, characteristics, sources, and environmental implications

Chao Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence, characteristics, sources, and environmental implications of microplastics in three common benthic species from the Chukchi Sea. The findings suggest that sea anemones could serve as bioindicators of microplastic pollution, with sources likely including melting sea ice, fishery activities, and ocean currents.

Microplastics and other anthropogenic particles are prevalent in mussels from San Francisco Bay, and show no correlation with PAHs

Natasha Klasios et al.

Summary: The study found microplastics and other anthropogenic microparticles in bivalves from San Francisco Bay, with significant variations in abundance between different sites, and no correlation between the number of microparticles and PAH concentrations. Bivalves may be suitable as bioindicators for microplastic levels in sediment, but not in surface water.

Maritime ports and beach management as sources of coastal macro-, meso-, and microplastic pollution

Summary: Plastic pollution is a global environmental issue that requires better management. This study found that marine plastic pollution exists along the coast of Asturias, Spain, mainly influenced by maritime ports and fishing activities, while atmospheric deposition may also be a source of microplastics.

Summary: This study evaluates the abundance and distribution of microplastics in the gastropods of a tropical estuary in Malaysia, finding that microplastics mainly originate from urban areas in the estuary. The majority of microplastics are fibers with black color.
