Non-indigenous species along the Israeli Mediterranean coast: tally, policy, outlook

Bella S. Galil et al.

Summary: The Israeli Mediterranean coast has recorded 452 multicellular non-indigenous species, with nearly 90% believed to have been introduced through the Suez Canal. The Israeli shelf serves as an important way station and breeding ground for Erythraean NIS, with a positive relationship between time since first record and spread. Recognition of factors driving the introduction and establishment of marine NIS are increasing, urging Contracting Parties to Barcelona Convention to take prevention and control measures.
