Paint fragments as polluting microplastics: A brief review

Christine C. Gaylarde et al.

Summary: Paint particles are a underestimated part of marine microplastic pollution, originating mainly from shipping and boating activities, road markings, and external surfaces of buildings, especially antifouling paints used on commercial vessels and leisure boats.

Quantification of Cu and Zn in antifouling paint films by XRF

Maria Lagerstrom et al.

Summary: This study investigates the standardization potential of the XRF method for determining the release rates of copper and zinc from antifouling paints, proposing universal calibration curves for accurate quantification of these metals. The transferability of the method between instruments was demonstrated, with validation samples showing concentrations within 5% of those determined through wet chemical analysis. The study also presents prerequisites and recommendations for the application of the method, discussing its applicability to both short and long-term release rate studies in the field.

Severe Toxic Effects on Pelagic Copepods from Maritime Exhaust Gas Scrubber Effluents

Peter Thor et al.

Summary: Effluent from exhaust gas cleaning systems on commercial ships, whether released directly to the sea or treated, contains high concentrations of heavy metals and PAHs that are toxic to marine organisms, leading to elevated mortality rates and impaired molting in copepods even at low concentrations. The toxic compounds in the effluents are not solely explained by individual PAHs or heavy metals, but may be from unknown compounds formed during the scrubbing process.

Shipping and Air Quality in Italian Port Cities: State-of-the-Art Analysis of Available Results of Estimated Impacts

Eva Merico et al.

Summary: This study examines the contribution of maritime activities in Italian ports to local air quality, particularly focusing on particulate matter and gaseous pollutants concentration. The variability in results suggests the need for harmonization of methods and data for comparison, which could be useful for implementing effective mitigation strategies.

Environmental pollution with antifouling paint particles: Distribution, ecotoxicology, and sustainable alternatives

Fernando G. Torres et al.

Summary: This study focused on the distribution and ecological effects of antifouling paint particles in the marine environment, discussed nontoxic biobased antifouling paints as potential alternatives, and highlighted the association of APPs with boat maintenance in boatyards and port areas. It also mentioned the significant contribution of paint particles to the morphological composition and the mortality induced by environmental concentrations of APPs in sediment dwellers and macroinvertebrates. Additionally, potential alternatives such as natural biocides and biopolymer binders in anti-fouling paints were proposed to prevent the formation of APPs.

Modelling of discharges from Baltic Sea shipping

Jukka-Pekka Jalkanen et al.

Summary: This paper describes the new developments of the Ship Traffic Emission Assessment Model (STEAM) which enable the modelling of pollutant discharges to water from ships. Each type of discharge is regulated by different sections of the IMO MARPOL convention, with varying emission patterns and total amounts reported for the year 2012 in the Baltic Sea area. Open-loop SOx scrubbing effluent was found to be the second-largest pollutant stream by volume, indicating a significant increase in scrubber discharges in recent years. The environmental impacts of these discharges need to be investigated in detail.
