Historical reconstruction of trace element concentrations and fluxes in a tropical coastal lagoon (Mexican Pacific) derived from 210Pb radiochronology

Jorge Feliciano Ontiveros-Cuadras et al.

Summary: By analyzing Pb-210-dated sediment cores, the historical trends of trace element concentrations, enrichments and flux ratios in the Xola-Paraman Lagoon (XPL) of the Mexican Pacific coast were evaluated. The major processes controlling the variability of elements were identified as input of lithogenic materials, periodical marine-water intrusion, and complexation between metal ions and organic matter. Changes in trace element flux ratios over time closely reflected the intensification of agricultural activities around the lagoon and the impact of major tropical storms.

Spatial variations and potential risks of heavy metals in sediments of Yueqing Bay, China

Weimin Yao et al.

Summary: This study assessed spatial variations and potential risks of heavy metals in sediments of Yueqing Bay by examining the relationship between metal concentrations and sediment physiochemical factors. Higher sediment metal concentrations were found in the inner bay compared to the central and outer bay, with some metals posing moderate ecological risks. Multivariate statistical analysis suggested that sediment texture, total organic carbon, and petroleum hydrocarbons had a significant influence on the distribution and fate of metals.

Mangrove sediments as long-term mercury sinks: Evidence from millennial to decadal time scales

Sanny Castro et al.

Summary: The study reveals that mangroves have the capacity to retain mercury over millennial time scales, acting as significant and long-term mercury sinks. Despite high mercury concentrations in mangrove sediments both before and after industrialization, mainly attributed to emissions from chlor-alkali industry and fine grain size and algal organic deposition, the less anomalous mercury concentrations in bottom sediments indicate Holocene ages potentially associated with weathering of the Serra do Mar mountains.
