Ecological relevance of high and low nucleic acid content bacteria in a monsoon influenced tropical estuary: Implications on the β-Glucosidase activity

Ranjith Eswaran et al.

Summary: In the tropical estuaries influenced by monsoon, high nucleic acid content (HNA) bacteria have a significant impact on bacterial activity during non-monsoon season, while low nucleic acid content (LNA) bacteria dominate during monsoon season. The interaction of monsoon rainfall and water column stratification alters bacterial activity significantly in the estuary.

Poorer diversity but tougher species in old ballast water: Biosecurity challenges explored from visual and molecular techniques

Alba Ardura et al.

Summary: Research shows that less diverse but more resistant and potentially harmful communities persist in ballast water over long voyages. The persistence of resistant species in ballast water threatens global marine biodiversity, considering the enormous volume transported daily. This should be considered in future research on bioinvasion risks associated with ballast water and transfer modeling and assessment.
