Impacts of COVID-19 on the finfish aquaculture industry of Bangladesh: A case study

Neaz A. Hasan et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the aquaculture sector in Bangladesh, leading to reduced profits for farmers, increased inequalities within the supply chain, fluctuating consumer prices, changes in consumer preferences for fish as a protein source, cost-cutting measures for farmers, and increased social and economic burdens in rural areas.

An extensive review on the consequences of chemical pesticides on human health and environment

Lata Rani et al.

Summary: Pesticides play a key role in agriculture, but can pose serious risks to human health and the environment, including social conflicts and negative impacts on neighboring communities. Future research is needed to explore and develop new agricultural concepts to reduce the use of chemical pesticides.

Spatiotemporal variations and source tracking of antibiotics in an ecological aquaculture farm in Southern China

Haochang Su et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations and spatiotemporal variations of antibiotics in water sources, pond water, sediment, feed, and reared shrimp samples during three rearing periods in an ecological shrimp farm in Southern China. Results suggested that water sources were likely the main source of antibiotics in the rearing ponds.

Pesticides contamination in the Thamirabarani, a perennial river in peninsular India: The first report on ecotoxicological and human health risk assessment

Ulaganathan Arisekar et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the distribution of pesticides and assesses the associated ecological and human health risks in the Thamirabarani River in Tamil Nadu, India. Results indicate that while pesticides in the water and sediments pose no ecological hazard to aquatic organisms, human exposure through ingestion and dermal contact may increase cancer risks.

Effects of dietary Papaveraceae extract on growth, feeding response, nutritional quality and serum biochemical indices of striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus)

Neaz A. Hasan et al.

Summary: The study found that incorporating Papaveraceae extracts (PE) into the diet of striped catfish can significantly improve growth performance, digestion, feed utilization, and feed conversion rate, while also having no significant impact on fish body composition and product quality. A dosage of 0.35 g/kg of PE is considered a safe and economically viable option for commercial pangasius farming, although higher doses may be needed for therapeutic action against Aeromonas hydrophila.

Can Bangladeshi pangasius farmers comply with the requirements of aquaculture certification?

Mohammad Mahfujul Haque et al.

Summary: This study utilized the FAO's SAFA framework to assess the practices of Bangladeshi pangasius farmers, revealing that indicators in the social and environmental dimensions had the lowest compliance rates and require significant improvement. Furthermore, aquaculture certification and farmer cooperation aspects need further refinement.

Emerging contaminants detected in aquaculture sites in Java, Indonesia

Nuning Vita Hidayati et al.

Summary: Pharmaceuticals of emerging concern, including ACM, TMP, OTC, and SMX, were detected in water samples from aquaculture environments and nonaquaculture sites in four regions on the northern coast of Central Java. OTC was the most ubiquitous antibiotic, presenting high health risks to algae and posing a significant concern as an emerging contaminant. More attention and sustainable management planning are needed for shrimp farms in the northern part of Central Java.

Effects of Dietary Silica Nanoparticle on Growth Performance, Protein Digestibility, Hematology, Digestive Morphology, and Muscle Composition of Nile Tilapia, Oreochromis Niloticus

Abul Bashar et al.

Summary: The use of silica nanoparticles in tilapia feed improved growth performance and feed efficiency, with the most optimum level being at 2 mg/kg in the diet. Blood glucose levels and kidney histology indicated stress in fish fed with 3 mg/kg silica nanoparticles, while 2 mg/kg silica nanoparticles increased gut surface area and goblet cell number significantly.

Decline in fish species diversity due to climatic and anthropogenic factors in Hakaluki Haor, an ecologically critical wetland in northeast Bangladesh

Md. Saifullah Bin Aziz et al.

Summary: This study evaluated changes in fish species diversity over time in Hakaluki Haor wetland in Bangladesh, using participatory rural appraisal tools and principal component analysis. The findings indicated that climate change and anthropogenic activities were the major factors responsible for the reduction in fish species diversity. Strategies such as deepening of beels and imposing fisheries regulations are necessary to sustain haor fisheries.
