Where are we? Towards an understanding of the selective accumulation of microplastics in mussels

Jiana Li et al.

Summary: Mussels are proposed as bioindicators of marine microplastic pollution, displaying selective uptake characteristics influenced by various factors. The organ-specific fate of microplastics and different retention times in mussels contribute to the complexity of studying their selective translocation processes. Further research is needed to address gaps and contradictions in this field, with improvements required in methodology and standardization.

Photo aging and fragmentation of polypropylene food packaging materials in artificial seawater

Xiaowei Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photo aging process of polypropylene food packaging materials in artificial seawater, revealing that the presence of antioxidant Irgafos 168 significantly inhibited the aging process by preventing the formation of hydroxyl radicals. This research provides insights into the role of antioxidants in affecting the environmental risk of hydrocarbon plastics in ocean environments.

Evaluation and optimisation of sample preparation protocols suitable for the analysis of plastic particles present in seafood

Julia Suessmann et al.

Summary: Small plastic particles are commonly found in marine and freshwater ecosystems and their inhabitants. This study tested ten extraction protocols for microplastics from biota in order to assess their suitability for digesting a wide range of seafood species. The most suitable protocol was found to be an enzymatic-alkaline approach, which efficiently digested the seafood matrix without significant additional cost or labor, with negligible degradation of most commercially relevant polymers.
