Summary: By providing additional nitrogen to mature Haematococcus pluvialis cells, efficient cyst germination and rapid conversion to cysts with a steady astaxanthin content were achieved, leading to a 2.1-fold increase in astaxanthin productivity. The germination-based semi-continuous process also demonstrated 2.6 times higher astaxanthin productivity in large-scale culture using power plant flue gas and a polymeric photobioreactor, offering a promising cultivation strategy for commercial mass production of natural astaxanthin.
